Meeting the Challenge; Living the Dream

The Scholarship Committee of Wyandanch is a not-for-profit corporation, with 501(c)(3) tax status. The Committee was organized with these objectives:
       - To celebrate Dr. King's birthday as a community, in the spirit of unity.
       - To establish a scholarship fund for graduating seniors.

The Scholarship Committee was established in 1985, after receiving approval from the Board of Education. The first dinner dance occurred on January 18, 1986. The support of the community produced the attendance of over 300 persons for that event.

An important factor of the celebration has been the selection of members of the community to be honored for outstanding service. The honorees have been individuals who exemplify the principles that Dr. King represented and died for. They have sacrificed for the community and have made Wyandanch a better place to live.

The Scholarship Committee has established the tradition of recognizing the five top-ranking seniors in the Wyandanch Memorial High School. In addition, we recognize the outstanding students in the Milton L. Olive Middle School, the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, and the LaFrancis Hardman Elementary School.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy"  ~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
